This would be my reconstruction of Mara’s lightsaber from the comic Mara Jade: by the Emperor’s Hand which Timothy Zahn co-wrote with Michel Stackpole. Interestingly enough, (okay, probably just to me, but still) this is the same saber as the widely acknowledged “official” Mara Jade saber built by Wizards of the Coast (I believe) and later reproduced by Master Replicas.
Even though it has been heavily modified you can see how all the same design elements are present in all the same places. Now, while I don’t particularly care for the giant screws or the fact that the entire EU inexplicably decided that the thing is purple, I think its a good design. Though I will admit that I’m rather fond of the original for its robust unattractiveness.

Mostly just for the record because there are no good images of this one to be found anywhere. I ended up spending nearly a month staring at screen captures and concept art trying to build an accurate model, chiefly because no one else seemed to care and this saber was the fulfillment of years of fervent fantasising on my part.

Okay, I think I’m finally finished with this one (at least for a while).
What I really wanted was a sort of cross between the two Kenobi sabers. The first to give it that defined, deliberately-constructed look and also to tie it to the correct time period. The second, to give it (for lack a better term) some Alec Guinness-y, old wizard vibes, also to pay a slight homage to the fact that C’baoth actually was Obi-wan for a bit, because I’m weird like that. And I wanted to merge them with a touch of Dooku because someone as image-conscious as C’baoth would insist on a saber that (even while looking brutally functional) looks nice.
It made sense to me anyway.
The green is a total guess on my part, but seeing as this is a Zahn saber it was only a choice between that and blue. I ended up going with the former because, firstly: I simply like green better, and secondly: to be less redundant as all three of the sabers whose designs I referenced were blue. I did toy with the idea of going out on a limb and declaring the saber to be yellow, because the idea of setting C’baoth up as a sort of anti-Windu was sorely tempting. But unfortunately, if the guy had really put that much effort into his saber, he would have used it a lot more (a.k.a. at all). This particular lightsaber is never so much as mentioned in the source material, which is why this whole thing has been a study in my wildly making stuff up.

I (relatively) recently picked up Michael A. Stackpole’s Union comic (a.k.a. Completely Gratuitous Drama Surrounding Luke and Mara’s Wedding, but since it was Stackpole he was rather tongue-in-cheek about the whole thing). But it was mostly for the lightsabers anyway, so I ended up trying to recreate concrete models from the artwork.
Kam Solusar’s Lightsaber 11.375″ Blue
This one is taken from one of the cover-arts. While the guy only appears in one of the good books (I Jedi) he is, chronologically, somewhat important so it wouldn’t hurt for him to get an official lightsaber design and this one does nicely. Especially since the backstory calls for a saber from the Prequel-era and this saber does seem to hit those design aesthetics.
Corran Horn’s Lightsaber 10.5″ Silver
Taken from the same cover art as before. I really like this design for some reason, granted not as Horn’s saber because his saber looks nothing like this (it looks like this). It just seems to have a very Original-Trilogy feel to it without actually looking derivative. While it does contain design cues from both the mara and luke sabers, this saber manages to look completely unlike either.
Mara Jade’s Lightsaber (Modified) 11.3125″ Red
This is the saber shows up in cover art and the comic proper. It also looks slightly different each time, so I first went and tried to get the best possible core design. Then I got annoyed because even with the best possible interpretation of the saber it still looked rather ugly. So I went through and tweaked pretty much everything; it’s still very much the same overall design, just much nicer looking. I feel I could get away with this because comics are always somewhat loose in their interpretation of existing props and besides the saber didn’t get nearly as much field modification as Mara’s Emperor’s Hand saber (I’ll actually very likely post about that at some point too). I think the design is rather nice and unique but on a cannon note, although Zahn himself brought up the idea of Mara constructing her own saber, this particular model does not appear to have actually happened as she still seems to be using the mara saber in Survivor’s Quest. So depending on how depressed I get with the EU in the future, I may end up giving this saber to Idle.

Now I still solidly subscribe to the seven-color lightsaber model, seeing as it’s still the only one that actually works. But anyway, This started with trying to see if I could get Stackpole’s more random lightsaber colors (silver, gold, and red/gold) to work visually, and it turned into seeing just how many distinct colors one could actually make.
We ended up with twenty total colors, well twenty-one in actual fact, but I omitted the red/magenta hybrid because it came out as this horrifically lurid hot-pink color that no self-respecting Jedi would be seen blue using.
As a side note, I also tried to get Anderson’s bronze color but it can’t be done, in all honesty I’m not surprised. But it is how I came across the copper, which I rather like.
And, yes, I know no one actually cares.
